Eyelashes, eyebrows and everything else

Pain is beauty- said no one ever.

How do you prepare for the summer months with holidays, weddings and events approaching? I would call myself low maintenance, I can leave the house without worrying about wearing makeup and am happy wandering around on holiday bare-faced and with sea tangled hair. It doesn't bother me. Don't get me wrong, my usual morning routine takes me over an hour, but the time I allocate to do my make-up and make my hair look presentable is usually spent scrolling through Instagram or making extravagant breakfasts and as a result I often leave in a rush with minimal make up and my hair in a messy bun.

This aside, I decided to get eyelash extensions before my recent holiday to Koh Samui, I was going away for 2 weeks and figured it was worth the expense to not have to do anything to my face whilst away. I asked the beautician to give me as natural looking extensions as possible as I still wanted to look like me. I was happy with the result and they did look natural and not over the top which was perfect for me. However, they are not low maintenance as I first expected. Hands up anyone else who sleeps on their front with their face buried in the pillow...who also has eyelash extensions...what I didn't realise was that every morning I would need to brush them back from their wonky sleep position into their rightful presentable positions. This was ok, until I then got in the pool and 'don't get my eyelashes wet' probably became my most used phrase whilst on holiday. When they got wet they clumped together and looked like the dreaded "over-mascarad" (yes, I made that word up) 15yr old mistake we all made. So not only did I have to brush them in the morning, I also couldn't compete in the handstand competitions with the German girl in the pool I so wanted to beat as I couldn't be bothered with the faff of having to brush my lashes after every dunking. Next comes the awkward phase where I knew I wouldn't get in-fills done so I have to wait for them all to naturally fall out. This seems fine unless your the person waiting for them to fall out and you have gaps the size of Argentina (that's what they feel like to me anyway) and you end up having to wear mascara anyway to avoid having to display a 'mind the gap' sign on your forehead. So it may seem like I'm blowing the whole thing out of proportion but I'm just giving you my upmost honest opinion on my first experience of having them. My next holiday will be spent with my own lashes.

A prep I swear by is an eyebrow wax and tint. A quick tidy up of any stray eyebrow hairs and a tint to avoid the dreaded drawn on look that's become so cringingly popular. Quick, cheap, pain free and the aftercare is most definitely low maintenance. If you're anything like me and your eyebrows are almost non existent then it's definitely a treatment worth having.

Next is the dreaded waxing season. Bikini area, legs, armpits, the whole shabang. Although, I'm not really bothered by the actual waxing process as once the first strip is ripped off my body goes into pain alert mode and numbs the rest of the pain for me. The only awkward thing I find is the growing phase especially if you want your armpits waxed, I've never successfully grown mine long enough to be able to have them done. I've often expected to and then held my arm up for them to inspect and have been told to grow them longer next time. I favour towards epilating at the moment, probably due to my lack of organisation in the run up to events, however you can epilate in the comfort of your own home, whenevers convenient, and a couple glasses of wine later and you can't even feel the pain!

Nails, nails, nails. This is just a must right if you have something coming up. Wrong, let me tell you something, I didn't have my nails done when I went on my last holiday. A little unusual for me because if I can be bothered with any kind of holiday prep it is to at least book in to have my nails made pretty. I ran out of time, and guess what, I didn't even care. I actually enjoyed seeing how much healthier my nails were after two weeks of sunshine, they were long and strong for the first time in history. Much to my bank balances enjoyment I may leave my nails natural more often.

A quick and easy detox I enjoy if you want fresh skin and to feel cleansed is the mint, lemon and cucumber infused drink. I take a cocktail shaker full of cut up lemons, cucumber and mint into work with me for approximately two weeks before an event/holiday, fill the shaker up with water and let it infuse in the fridge. Try and drink 4/5 cups a day, filling the shaker back up each time you use it so it has time to infuse. It's fresh, tastes great, almost tastes like a cocktail, and you will be the envy of all your colleagues when your skin is glowing. You can try other alternatives such as strawberries, pineapple, orange, lime and so on but I would always recommend including lemon in whatever combination you go for. I swear by drinking lemon.

If you have any tips on how you prepare then please share them below as I'd love to hear them.
